We recently completed a MARA Rating for a treatment for a kidney disease that can progress to kidney failure over time.
The phase 3 trial answered one question clearly: does this treatment reduce protein in the urine? It does. By 50%, compared to placebo.
Payers ask a different question: does that reduction translate into preserved kidney function and better outcomes for patients — at an acceptable cost?
That question was not answered. The FDA noted that long-term clinical benefit has not been established. The estimated cost per outcome gained was $894,000.
Two questions. One answered. One not.
